Marriage Expenses, Dowry-Like “Gifts,” and Lack of Financial Investment in Daughters

In many Indian households, daughters are not given equal financial support, investment, property access, or career-building opportunities before marriage. Instead, families often save wealth for wedding expenses, gold, cars, and “gifts” given during marriage.

Although presented as tradition or gifting, this has become a socially normalized modern form of dowry in many cases. Huge marriage spending is prioritized over a daughter’s long-term financial independence and security.

This system creates:

financial dependence,
pressure on families,
delayed independence for women,
emotional burden,
and unequal treatment between sons and daughters.

There should be stronger public discussion and policy reforms around:

-discouraging excessive wedding spending beyond reasonable financial limits,
-stricter scrutiny of luxury “gifts” linked to marriage,
-encouraging equal sharing of marriage expenses between bride and groom sides,
-and promoting investment in daughters’ education, career growth, assets, and independence before marriage instead of performative social spending.

A society should value women’s long-term freedom more than one-day ceremonies.
