Save dal lake

Dal Lake is world-renowned as the "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir." With its iconic shikaras (wooden boats), floating gardens, and historic houseboats against the backdrop of the Pir Panjal mountains, it has inspired poets and attracted travelers for centuries.
However, behind its postcard-perfect image lies a grim reality. Dal Lake is facing a severe ecological crisis, and the call to "Save Dal Lake" is no longer just a conservationist slogan—it is an urgent necessity for the survival of Kashmir's ecosystem and economy.
The Threats Facing Dal Lake
The lake is shrinking and deteriorating at an alarming rate due to several interlocking issues:
Pollution and Sewage: Millions of liters of untreated sewage, plastic waste, and chemical effluents from surrounding residential areas, hotels, and houseboats drain into the lake daily.
Encroachment: Land grabbing, illegal constructions, and the expansion of floating gardens have drastically reduced the lake's surface area. Historically spanning over 75 square kilometers, it has shrunk to less than half that size.
Weed Infestation: High levels of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) from sewage cause eutrophication. This has led to an explosion of excessive weed growth and toxic algal blooms, choking aquatic life and suffocating the water body.
Siltation: Heavy silt flowing down from the degraded catchment areas of the surrounding mountains is making the lake increasingly shallow.
