Child Labour and Poverty in Chennai

In Chennai, child labour continues to exist in hidden and informal sectors despite laws prohibiting it.

In several low-income areas, children are seen working in small shops, roadside stalls, workshops, construction sites, or doing informal street vending. For many families living in poverty, children are forced to contribute to household income instead of attending school.

The root cause is often economic hardship and lack of stable employment for adults. When families struggle to meet basic needs like food, rent, and healthcare, education becomes secondary to survival.

Child labour has serious long-term consequences. Children who work instead of studying often miss out on education, limiting their future opportunities and trapping them in cycles of poverty. Physical labour at a young age can also lead to health problems, injuries, and emotional stress.

Another major concern is school dropout rates among disadvantaged communities. Even when children enroll in school, financial pressure, lack of support, and difficult home conditions can force them to leave early.

Despite government regulations and awareness programs, enforcement gaps and social inequality allow child labour to persist in certain informal sectors that are harder to monitor.

Addressing this issue requires more than just legal action. It demands stronger social welfare systems, accessible education, financial support for struggling families, and community awareness about the importance of childhood education.

Every child deserves the right to learn, grow, and experience a safe childhood. Ending child labour is not only a legal responsibility but a moral one for society as a whole.
