Exploitation in Private Hospitals

In Chennai, private healthcare has improved access to treatment—but also raised concerns about overcharging and exploitation.

Many patients report that medical costs in private hospitals can become extremely high, especially during emergencies when families have no time to compare or question bills. Unexpected charges for tests, procedures, and hospital stays often place heavy financial stress on families.

In some cases, patients feel pressured into undergoing additional tests or treatments that may not always be clearly explained. This creates a sense of mistrust between patients and healthcare providers.

Emergency situations are particularly sensitive. Families, already emotionally distressed, may agree to expensive treatments without fully understanding long-term costs, leading to financial hardship or debt.

Another concern is the wide gap in affordability between public and private healthcare. While government hospitals provide low-cost treatment, overcrowding and limited resources push many people toward private hospitals, even when it is financially difficult.

The issue is not about all hospitals, but about ensuring transparency, ethical billing, and patient rights across the healthcare system.

Stronger regulation, clear pricing policies, and better awareness of patient rights are essential to prevent exploitation and ensure that healthcare remains both accessible and fair for everyone.
