Corruption in electric department
Our electricity department in Kashmir has a serious corruption problem. The corruption is such that I installed the electricity meter with my own money, completed the agreement process with my own money, and after that I should only pay for the electricity units I actually consume.
But they add extra charges in the bill. For example, they add around 200 rupees under something called “sanctioned load charges.” I filed an RTI asking what exactly this sanctioned load means. If I consumed only a certain number of units, then why am I being charged extra?
For example, my shop’s meter reading showed only 10 units consumed. The actual cost for those 10 units should have been around 50 rupees. But instead, my total bill was around 250 rupees because they added an extra 200 rupees.
I raised the question: if I consumed electricity worth only 50 rupees, then what are these extra 200 rupees for? They replied that it was a “load charge.” After that, I filed another RTI asking for the legal explanation and calculation of those charges, but they stopped responding.
This is the kind of corruption people are facing.
